LONG ANSWER

Q1 -  Our language is part of our culture and we are proud of it. Describe how regretful M. Hamel and the village elders are for having neglected their mother tongue, French.
Ans: Mother tongue is part and parcel of one's culture and tradition. When Alsace and Lorraine were captured by Prussia and annexed with them, M. Hamel and his students understood the importance of their mother tongue, French. German Bismarck wanted to teach German language in Alsace and Lorraine instead of French. The French people lost their chance to learn French language.
They felt sad for having neglected their native language, French. They realized rather late that their language was part of their culture and they should be proud of it.

It was only after they had been stopped learning their language that they understood its value. The imposition of German language made them suddenly realized that they lost their freedom. On the last day of the French class the village elders were seated on the back benches. M. Hamel wore  his formal suit as a mark of respect. He expressed how they had a great deal to reproach themselves because most of the people in Alsace could neither speak nor write French.

Parents preferred to put their children to work on farms or mills. M. Hamel regretfully said how he himself sometimes sent his students out to water his flowers instead of giving them lessons. He requested the village elders to guard French language well, as it was the most beautiful language in the world. They felt guilty and sad for having ignored their mother tongue.
