 Literary Devices

1. Alliteration - Repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of two or more consecutive words is called Alliteration. For example

(1) September sunlight

(2) tree trembles

2. Simile – comparison between two things using like or as.

Sleek as a lizard

3. Metaphor – an indirect comparison between two things. Generally, a quality is compared.

(1) “She enters the thickness, and a machine starts up” - the noise created by the movement of the birds is compared to the machine’s noise
(2) “It is the engine of her family.” here the sound is compared to be an engine.
(3) “Showing her barred face identity mask”

4. Personification – the attribution of personal nature characteristics to something non-human

The whole tree trembles and thrills. Here tree trembles like a human being.

 5. Transferred Epithet – the figure of speech where the adverb is transferred to another noun

Cruel bars: The door of the jail is barred with iron rods. It is not cruel. It is a door of the cell. But the poet says cruel bars. The poet gives the feelings of a human being to the door. Is the door is cruel?  How the door becomes cruel? .

Ans: At the beginning and the ending of the poem, the laburnum tree was standing still and silent just like death-like. It is patiently awaiting gold finches to come and sit on her branches.

2. To what is the bird’s movement compared to?

Ans: The bird’s movement is compared to a lizard because it was abrupt, sleek and alert. It is a simile.

3. Why is the image of the engine represented?

Ans: An engine is the source to run the machine. The bird is compared to an engine because she is the feeding her children. As a machine cannot work without an engine, her family can’t survive without her.

5. What does the phrase “her barred face identity” mean?

Ans: The phrase “her barred face identity ” indicates that the bird’s face becomes her identity and symbol of recognition. The people identify the bird by noticing its barred face. There are some bars on its face

A. What was his idea about the whole world?

Ans: The whole world was nothing but a big rat trap

B. What do you mean by the word 'bait'?

Ans: 'Bait' means temptations to cheat someone. It is in the form of an attractive offer.

C. Who is a peddler?

Ans: A 'peddler' is the one who sells small things, walking door to door.

D. Who is the author of "The Rattrap"?

Ans: Selma Lagerlof, a Swedish writer.

Ans: The owner showed regret because there was none to give him company for the Christmas

Ans: The Speaker is kindhearted and friendly person

 SHORT ANSWERS

1. What do you mean by 'Crofter'?

Ans. Crofter is a farmer who leases the land from the landlord and does agriculture and foster his cattle.

 2.  Why was the crofter so friendly to the peddler?

Ans: The crofter had no wife and children, who lived alone in his gray cottage. In order to avoid his loneliness he welcomed the peddler. He was happy to get someone to talk in the night.

 3. What was the philosophy of the peddler?

Ans: The peddler thought that the whole world was a big rattrap. There were  lots of baits awaiting for the people to cheat them mercilessly.

 4. Why did the crofter show 30 kronor to the peddler?

Ans: The crofter thought that the peddler would not believe that he had 30 kronor. So he opened his leather pouch and took out the money, just to show him.

5. Why did the peddler go to the forest?

Ans: The peddler stole the crofter's money and scared of being caught by the police. He disliked to move along the main road. So he selected a forest road.

 6. Why did the rattrap seller refuse the invitation to the manor house?

Ans: The stolen money was in his pocket. He feared of being caught with the stolen money. He also thought that the money in his pocket was a kind of bait.

 7.  Why did the rattrap seller accept Edla Willmanson's invitation?

Ans: Edla Willmanson promised him that he would be back from her manor house without any problem. She invited him lovingly. The felt some confidence in her. So he went along with her.

 8. What did the ironmaster do when he realized his mistake?

Ans: Ironmaster was very angry and charged at the peddler. He also said that the peddler didn't reveal his identity. He threatened him that he would call the police. But the peddler defended himself by saying that it was not his fault. He didn't tell any lie.

 9. What message does the story rattrap convey?

Ans: There are many tempting things in the world as in the form of baits. These

 baits will entrap the people for ever. Try not to attract the baits.

 10. Edla Willmansson gave a little cry when she opened the gift packet of the peddler. Why?

Ans: When she opened the packet, she saw a small rattrap in which there were  three wrinkled ten kronor notes. She also found a letter in which the peddler

praised her as she was helpful to him. He requested her to return the money to the old crofter. He promised her that he would be a good citizen. He signed the letter as a captain.

 Long Answer

1. Differentiate the characters of Iron master and his daughter, Miss Edla Willmanssion.

 Ans. They are totally different characters from one another in many ways. The Ironmaster is very quick in action. when he sees the peddler, he thinks that it is his old regimental comrade. It is a hasty conclusion. He pays much respect to him and invite him to his house without thinking anything. He feels sorry for his pitiable state. He wants to help him to come out of his poor state of life. He has many plans to help him. He is kindhearted and most friendly to his beloveds. But when he understands the true identity of the peddler, he gets angry and shouts at him. He accuses the peddler that he does wrong. He plans to call the sheriff for enquiring the matter.

Edla Wllmanssion, on the other hand is more practical and a better judge than her father. When she meets the peddler she thinks that  he may be an escaped prisoner or a thief. But she keeps it in her mind. She also understands that he is not much educated or is a captain. But she doesn't discard him because she compels him to be with her in the Christmas. She is the embodiment of selfless love and caring. Even if  she understands that the peddler is not the captain as her father thinks,  she dislikes him to send him out. It is because of her unconditional love and kindness, the peddler is elevated to a captain and becomes a good man.

1. How did the changed Mrs. Pearson behave with Doris?
Ans: The changed Mrs. Pearson used sharp wordings. She said that she didn't prepare tea for her. She also refused to iron her yellow silk. She pitiably  laughed at her boy friend, Charlie Spence.

2. How did Mrs. Fitzgerald try to help Mrs. Pearson?
Ans: Mrs. Fitzgerald magically changed her own personality with Mrs. Pearson. Then  Mrs. Fitzgerald acted in a tough manner with Mr. George Pearson and his children. She made them to understand the importance of a mother in the family. Rather, she inspired Mrs. Pearson to be the boss of her house and order them standing in her own leg. She also taught her not to be a servant in the family.

3. Do you agree with Mrs. Fitzgerald when she says that a house wife must be the boss of her family?

Ans: Yes. Mrs. Pearson is a poor house wife. She only knows to love her husband and children. Whether they are right or wrong she loves them. But Mrs. Fitzgerald tells her that her husband and children must share her work. They have to understand the difficulty of the household work. Mr. Pearson must stop going to the club at night. She tells her to put her foot down and be the boss of her family.

4. Mrs.  Pearson said that she would work only forty hours a week. How did Doris react on it?
Ans:
Doris couldn't believe her ears. She asked her mother whether she would go out and enjoy for a weekend. She also thought that her mother became crazy due to some accident or some unknown hit on her head. She believed that her mother would never get a company to go out.


5. How was Mr. George  treated at the club according to Mrs. Fitzgerald?
Ans: According to Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mr. George was a laughing stock in the club. They would mock at him as he would never take his wife to the club. His wife sat alone at his home. They called him Pompy Ompy Pearson. They thought that he was very slow as well as pompous and showy.


6. How does Mrs. Fitzgerald express her disapproval of Charlie Spence?
Ans: Mrs. Fitzgerald says that Charlie Spence has buck teeth and he is half-witted. She also asks her why she doesn't get a better boy than Charlie Spence.

7. George, Doris and Cyril were all ungrateful. How can you prove?
Ans: George, Doris and Cyril thought that household duties were not a work as the work in the office. They didn't acknowledge the work done by Mrs. Pearson at home. They even bullied her. They considered her as a servant. When they ordered Mrs. Pearson obeyed. They didn't respect her. 

8. How does the Pearson family enjoy finally?
Ans: They enjoyed well in the end of the play. Doris and Cyril were ready to prepare their supper. Mrs. Pearson and Mr. George played a game of rummy. She chit chatted with her husband. Mr. George didn't go to the club. Doris didn't go with Charlie Spence.

9. How does Mrs. Fitzgerald bring about a change in Mrs. Pearson's personality?
Ans: Mrs. Annie Pearson was a quiet and submissive person. She thought that her important duty was to look after the  needs of her husband and children. As a result of that her husband, son and daughter were spoilt. They bullied her and ordered as the boss of the family. Mrs. Fitzgerald thought that Mrs. Pearson should not bear it as a home maker. Mrs. Fitzgerald exchanged personalities with Mrs. Pearson. Then Mrs. Pearson became bold, and even rude. They soon came to understood that they should not burden her with their work. They understood their duties.

10. What is the moral of the play?
Ans: The moral of the play is that a mother has certain rights in her family. Household work is considered to be a work. The husband and children should share household work. They must value the household work and it should be recognized.

Long Answer

1. Show the difference between Mrs. Pearson's and Mrs. Fitzgerald's attitudes and personalities.
Ans: Mrs. Pearson and Mrs. Fitzgerald were entirely different characters. Mrs. Pearson is simple and humble  as well as timid and fearful, where as Mrs. Fitzgerald is bold , confident, courageous and dominating character.

Mrs. Pearson obeys the order of her family. She does all the work for them. She never questions them. She is highly contented. She works in her own house as a servant. She never cares when she is bullied by her husband or children.  

But Mrs. Fitzgerald is entirely different from Mrs. Pearson. She is in Asia for many years. She is a dominating character. She knows many tricks from abroad. She is well acquainted with her rights, she demands respect.  Her character is suitable for a modern lady. In the play she establishes an identity of a mother in the family. She is the best example of the present women.
